The National Multi-sectoral Assessment on Kuchi (NMAK) was conducted in the winter of 2003-2004, as a collaborative exercise with the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Ministry of Frontiers and Tribal Affairs and the Central Statistics office.

The main purpose of the NMAK assessment was to provide primary data on the Kuchi that can be used as the basis for programming. It is therefore not a vulnerability analysis.

All Kuchi communities were surveyed by the teams, and the community was the basic unit of observation. "Kuchi" were defined as pastoralists that are either still migratory or have recently settled due to the effects of the recent drought.

Information was collected on migration patterns, land and livestock ownership, pasture access, water sources, income sources, and access to services (health care and education).
