The USAID funded program "Rebuilding Agricultural Markets Program in Afghanistan" identified the pastoralists of Afghanistan as a population group to which little attention was given. The complexity of the problems faced by these nomadic (transhumant) pastoralists are such that a specialized advisor was tasked with supporting the government of Afghanistan to formulate an overall vision and support strategy for this population group. The result of this process can be found under 'Pastoralist Support Strategy'. A broad-based consultation process was initiated to formulate this strategy document, with contributions from International and National experts, members of the donor community, and most importantly the pastoralists themselves. In November 2005 a Pastoralist Conference was organized in Kabul, Afghanistan, in which pastoralist leaders could share views with key members from the government and national and international organizations. The proceedings from this Conference can be found under 'Conference Report'. Before the inception of the consultative processes, a background document was prepared, in an attempt to create an equal knowledge base for the participants of the Conference. This document provides important background information on this population group and may be found under 'Background document on Pastoralists'. More information on these Afghan pastoralists may be found under 'Recent Assessments of the Kuchi', 'Maps of locations and migration routes', and 'Other documentation on Afghan pastoralists'.
